2024 Veterans Cup Round 4 Lake of Menteith
Update from Match Secretary Jock Royan .
Yet another glorious fishing day for Round 4 of the Veterans Cup at the Lake of Menteith Fisheries yesterday. 6mph westerly breeze, 80% cloud cover and 15DegC.
The day started well as usual with a Lorne Sausage Roll generously provided by John The Rose House in Perth. We had 13 boats and the majority headed towards Gateside Bay, where good numbers of fish had been caught in the recent National Semi and Scottish Clubs. Quite a few rods bent on the first drift but perhaps due to boat pressure and the congested area, the fish weren’t exactly crawling up the line.
By lunchtime most anglers had fish to report, with my boat partner Lee Hollis, leading the field with 6. We were all were keen to get an update on the big match between Magic & Byran and it was quickly established that Magic was in the lead 5-1. Apparently after Byran had caught his first on drys then missed 4 others on the first drift, Magic started the engine, turned sharp right and propped Byran’s line to prevent him fishing dries! Certainly a new tactic for me but one to keep up the sleeve! 😂
Following a delicious lunch, again provided by the Rose House, the boats left the shore in different directions. We spent the afternoon around the Gap, Butts and Open Water in the East Basin, targeting small pods of feeding fish. Quite a few were caught with a single dry in amongst the reeds in Chicken Leg Bay, where the inside line was a benefit.
As the boats headed back for a 5pm finish, it was evident that although conditions couldn’t have been better, we had to fish hard for the rewards. Exactly the way fishing should be! Cammy Duncan was a clear winner on 12 Fish with Lee Hollis snapping at his heels on 10. Dry Fly again was the most successful method so you doubters take note!
If anyone is interested in fishing in our October match (14-16) against the Scottish Select Team, please let me know.
