2024 Veterans Cup Round 5 Lake of Menteith
Update on yesterdays 5th round from Match Secretary, Jock Royan.
"Another thoroughly enjoyable day yesterday in Round 5 of our Military Veterans Cup.
We were greeted with a flat calm however over breakfast and the normal banter, this generated to a light ripple by the time we started. Lots of cloud cover had everyone chomping at the bit and in such a rush to get to the hot spots, Lee Hollis trapped his rod between his boat seat and an adjoining boat resulting in a snap & giggles from the crowd! Bad admin = tough love!
Fish were up and feeding throughout the morning sessions with some good numbers being caught. I fished with Glen Lamont and we had a great day with a few “incidents”. He hooked the rope in Gateside Bay, had to get an air-drop of additional fluorocarbon due to tangles and drove us deep into the reeds at Reedy Point whilst writing a WhatsApp message to the Samaritans!
Lunch was once again generously provided by John Paul Maestri and The Rose House in Perth. Always the highlight of the day and a real buzz as tales of woe and joy are shared. A common theme being there is always an excuse!
We headed back out at 1pm and due to the transparent information sharing on methods & areas, catches significantly improved during the afternoon session. Thankfully for the first time this season, no lines were propped in Magic’s boat. This may have been pure luck but probably more due to the fact that he wasn’t on the engine!
A final note to summarise our day. I’ve been competition fishing for 35 years and in that time have never seen anything to match the quality of fish currently in the Lake of Menteith Fisheries . We landed 30 fish in our boat yesterday and less than 5 were under 3lbs. It’s impossible to bully these rod-benders and very easy to break leaders. Bad angling on my part resulted in 4 breakages on the top dropper yesterday and 16 lost flies. 2 were probably double-shooters but 9lb Riverge is normally sufficient to cope. Quint and his team should be rightfully very proud of their achievements and we anglers should count ourselves very fortunate".
