2024 Veterans Cup Round 3 Lake of Menteith

Round 3 Veterans Cup update from Match Secretary Jock Royan!

"We were very fortunate to incorporate the biggest match in the competition calendar in Round 3 of the Veterans Cup. Yes it was the final day of the Kit-Kat Cup and with a win each from day 1 & 2, Jock and Lindsay were chomping at the bit. I won’t steal their thunder on the results but there was a significant twist in the final hour of their match!

Due to late call-off, we were delighted to invite 2 guest anglers to round 3 of our Veterans Cup. Thanks Craig Hewitson & James Little for coming at short notice and filling the slots. We were greeted with 100% cloud cover and a light south easterly breeze. Trout were seen sipping buzzers and anticipation heightened as we set up and enjoyed a breakfast roll courtesy of John Paul Maestri and The Rose House in Perth.

We started just before 9 with a decent split of boats heading south, west and east. The breaking sun made fishing slightly more challenging mid-morning but by lunchtime, most of the 24 anglers had bent their rods. Lee Hollis had made a notable start catching 9 fish in the morning session and the Kit-Kat Cup was all square at 4 each. The lunch break was as usual a hive of activity with banter, sandwiches, soup and cake shared freely. In addition to thanking Magic for generously providing the breakfast and lunch, a big shout out also to Geoff Allan for bringing some home-smoked Menteith Trout for the troops. It was absolutely delicious and more of the same would be most welcome.

I had the fortune of drawing in-form angler Byran Yip as boat partner and what an absolutely gentleman he is. We had a great day, full of fun and I very much look forward to fishing with him again. He’s now a dry-fly convert and will be honing the skills over the next few weeks. All I can say is Magic, he’s coming for you!

The wind dropped over lunch as the afternoon session began with what can only be described as excellent fishing conditions. Complete cloud cover, 17 Deg and light breeze. The fish were up in the water and feeding on a mixture of tiny midge, buzzers and mayfly. Some of the better bags were caught on drys but unfortunately the heavens opened at 15:30 and incessant rain from then until finish. 24 drowned rats arrived ashore at 17:00, handed in their paper mashie score cards, said brief farewells and headed home.

A final note to congratulate both MVFFC Scottish Clubs teams in qualifying for the Semi Final with strong performances by Graeme Ferguson and JP Maestri. Also congratulations to our own Cameron Duncan for his individual performance on Saturday’s heat catching 16 fish for the Glencoe Fly Fishers.

A Pearl of wisdom for the lesser experienced anglers - When the conditions are absolutely perfect for top of the water sport, make sure you have a floating line 😉!"
